Thursday 10th September
Dear All
Welcome to our weekly newsletter.
“How many times shall I forgive?” Peter asks Jesus. It is such a wonderfully human question. What Peter really seems to be asking is: **When have I done enough? When am I allowed to stop?**
We can maybe all be rather good at keeping score. At putting things down on a tally, if you will. We can be remarkably good at remembering the irritating comments, the disappointment, the person who sees things differently from us, or the occasion when we were definitely right… and they were definitely wrong!
Paul is almost challenging us in Romans: “Why do you judge your brother or sister?”
We will not always agree. We will make different choices, hold different opinions and understand things differently — and Amen to that. Yet Paul reminds us that ultimately, we all stand before God.
Perhaps both readings invite us to loosen our grip a little — on judgement, resentment and our need to keep score.
Forgiveness does not mean pretending that hurt doesn’t matter, nor does it mean remaining in situations that are harmful. But it does mean refusing to let hurt have the final word.
So perhaps this week we might notice where we are keeping a scorecard. Is there a judgement we could soften, a resentment we could begin to release, or simply a little more grace we could offer?
After all, we live each day by the extraordinary grace God first offers us.
